With the honoring of Dr. King last Monday, the word "hero" has been present in much of the media lately.
What is a hero? Choose a character from a book you are reading or one you have read recently to illustrate your definition. Use specific, cited evidence from the text to demonstrate why this character is (or is not) a good example of a hero.

A hero is a person or an icon that represents justice, courage, or any other value, important to a person for sentimental reasons.
An example might be a father/mother/sibling/ or other family member, a friend, or an icon(somebody well known of famous).

I realize that the extra line break in the post as originally written may have been confusing, I've fixed that, so it is easier to understand. I'd intended for you to address both parts of the question in your response.
So far, you've provided your working definition. Can you please add to your response to include the example pulled from a text you are reading? Remember to use specific, cited evidence to support why this character is a good example (or non-example) of your definition.

A hero is someone that has given up something of his or her self to help someone else, a person of noble or courageous qualities, or someone's idol; a person to look up to.
In the book, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, I see Harry as a hero because of the courage he shows during his battle with Lord Voldemort..
~Harry jumped to his feet, caught Quirrel by the arm, and hung on as tight as he could. Quirrel screamed as he tried to throw Harry off – the pain in Harry’s head was building – he couldn’t see – he could only hear the voice of Quirrel’s terrible shrieks and Voldemort’s yells of “KILL HIM! KILL HIM! KILL HIM!”~
In these few sentences, Harry shows that he conquered his fear of Lord Voldemort and would not stop till he had defeated him. He held on to Quirrel as a double-edged sword. Despite inflicting pain on his self, Harry kept attacking so he could protect the ones he loved.
A hero is someone who sacrifices something for someone or something else. They are not necessarily fearless, but they do brave things. The hero in my book did not fight off a horde of goblins. He did not sacrifice his arm for the greater good. He instead, saved a poor squirrel from being shot. Sorry about the odd speech above. The hero in my book's name is David Rain. He is a tenant in a mysterious house. The owner makes clay dragons that seem to move around. David recieves a dragon named "Gadzooks" that helps him with writing a story. "Gadzooks" helps him by sending David pictures of words in his mind. It takes lots of courage for him to believe that the dragons are real, and he eventually saves the dragon's life by believing in it.
So, um its an "interesting" book.
i a reading a book called the invisible man. in this book, a stranger comes to an often deserted inn. he is completely covered from head to toe and you can only see his nose. the innkeeper's wife is very nosy and tries to find out as much about him as she can, but still be nice to him so he will stay. as it turns out, at this point there is no hero in the book. the stranger spends all his time locked up avoiding people as much as possible and has the strangest habits, often scaring people away even if he doesnt mean to. the innkeeper is nosy and a busybody, and is good at keeping things running well but is a little too pushy with people, especially someone like this stranger. the girl who helps her out is lazy and distracted. the other mentioned characters so far only seem interested in discovering the secret behind the new strangers bandages. this does not meet my definition of hero at all. a hero is a person(possibly animal) who is willing to stand up for what is right even if it means being uncomfortable or not looking good. a hero is someone who will do a good deed without needing a reward or recognition, and does not always put themself first. if the characters in this book were less concerned with themselves and the latest gossip, then they would have more potential to be heros and heroins.
